On Set: Tyga’s “Wait For A Minute” Ft. Justin Bieber

It was last Thursday, alarm goes off at a quarter to five, the sun is not even up yet and I’m questioning why I am. Oh yeah, today is the day we will shoot Justin Bieber. Crazy.

It was an absolute honor to work with director, Krista Liney on another music video project so soon, especially since it was with Tyga and his team again too. Those guys were all so gracious on the last shoot so it was a no-brainer to work with them again. This time around Justin Bieber was featured on the track which made it an even bigger deal. My role for the day was set photographer while Kevin shot 2nd Unit.

We arrived around 9am. It was a hot sunny day in the LBC, a perfect day to be on an air-conditioned stage. Because of this, I only stepped outside a couple of times that day and when I stepped out in the afternoon I was shocked (kinda) to see all of JB’s fans lined up outside the studio fence. To be fair, I guess it was somewhat like that on set inside as well with a 20 person crew, the talent and their entourages, hair, makeup, wardrobe, plus 20 something extras. I guess what felt strange about the fans outside was that they knew we were inside shooting the video before we knew they knew. That’s a creepy feeling to know there is a mob of people outside the building waiting for the doors to open.

This time instead of a practical set, the shoot took place on a greenscreen. This meant all angles, movements, and lighting set-ups became critical. Lair’s, Thor Raxlen was there to make sure DP Christopher Walters was getting what he needed for his job later when he creates the world around Tyga and Bieber. All things considered, everything went rather smoothly, we didn’t go into overtime, and after a couple of weeks of CG, Tyga & Bieber will end up with a really cool video.

Highlight of the day: The back of Kevin’s head made Bieber’s Instagram, receiving over 700,000 likes and almost 10,000 comments! Kevin, your ear is famous yo!
